INTERVIEW: Pole dancer, free spirit and global yogi, Emma Corbett

I met Emma Corbett while doing a Seva yoga teaching exchange at the Bali Silent Retreat late 2016. Emma is a world traveller who shares her passions of pole dancing and yoga and meditation with audiences and students around the globe. I caught up with Emma via Skype to find out more about her globetrotting lifestyle and how she balances her various disciplines of pole, yoga, meditation and coming soon, a book!

Can you tell me about your family background and how you first got into yoga. Were your parents particularly athletic people?

My Mum’s always been quite fit. Actually it was my dad who took me to my first yoga class when I was about eight. He’s one of those people who always stands right up front and centre of every class, so I’d always be right beside him. And then he started going to a gym, and again I was up beside him for aerobics and pump and everything, and then the gym started offering yoga so this was about twenty odd years ago, so I would be front and centre beside him for yoga as well, and that’s how I started practicing yoga. Happy Buddha Retreat: An Oasis of Peace and Love in the Blue Mountains, Australia

Happy Buddha Retreat is nestled on the side of a mountain nearby the town of Wentworth Falls in the Blue Mountains, about an hour and a half from Sydney. I came here looking for a relaxing place where I could practice yoga, meet like minded people, eat healthy food, be in a natural environment and be able to take time to tune into my heart.

I flew from Melbourne to Sydney, and at the airport I was able to buy a train ticket all the way to the Wentworth Falls train station, via a change at Central Station. After a very pleasant train trip (except for the non-opening windows – Sydney train people if you are reading this pleas fix!) I arrived in the mountains, and was picked up by my friend, the current manager of the retreat.

My first impressions were: tranquility, nature, a fun and uplifting atmosphere, and a strong community of people supporting the participants. READ MORE

After a month characterised by some heavy anxiety along the lines of: what I am doing with my life, what is going on, why I am in debt, why am I single, etc. etc., essentially, fighting with ‘what is’ and focusing on the negative, I realised I needed to take some drastic action to get back on track.

The external conditions and circumstances of our life are a pretty accurate reflection of our internal reality. If we focus on lack, and shine the light on what we don’t have (in whatever area of life) then this lack and not-having-ness will increase. And if we change our focus to gratitude and to what we do have, then abundance in all areas of our life will increase. The only thing we can really manage is our response to life, our attitude to what happens to us: essentially, our mind.

Change your mind by changing your thought patterns and beliefs, and by transforming and transmuting anxiety into creative energy, your external life will start to change accordingly.  READ MORE
