Byron Spirit Festival Feb 2012

Press Release from Byron Spirit Festival November 2011

The Byron shire town of Mullumbimby will host the inaugural Byron SPIRIT FESTIVAL in February of next year.  This event will unite the worlds of yoga, kirtan, conscious dance, tantra, healing and music to invigorate body, mind and soul in an inclusive, community-based celebration.

Local, national and international practitioners will impart their gifts within a charming village hub of healthy lifestyle, natural beauty and social awareness.

Inspired by the success of the Mullum Music Festival, Spirit Festival will incorporate and promote the many yoga studios, health clubs, health food outlets, cafes, markets, college and community halls for all the activities over the weekend.  The central hubs will be the Mullum Civic Centre, and Santos, with workshops, talks, films, dances and more extending as far out of town as Durrumbul Hall.

The organizers are Alex Grant (of FindYoga.com), Kate Little (Gaia Retreat, director of the Global Village at Splendour in the Grass, Alison Pearl (music promoter, Summersong Music Camp director), Chris Dekker (Earthdance International), and Noel Walker.  On the creation of this inaugural event Alex Grant says

“Studies in Australia prove that over two million of us are committed to improving our health and well being.  I’ve had a good taste of similar events in Bali and the United States, and I’m convinced that with the deep pool of talent in our region, and our great community, we’re going to create one of the best festivals of this kind in the world.”

The extensive program offers dozens of classes per day in a myriad of yoga styles, with an eye towards practitioners of all levels.  There will also be workshops, lectures, films, dance, Skype conferencing, kirtan with coffee at local cafes, sound showers, healing practitioners available for sessions, a professional Kidz Space run by Red Tent Yoga, raw food, and healthy lifestyle stalls from local and national businesses.

The list of teachers and presenters currently includes:  Mark Whitwell, Louisa Sear, Simon Marrocco, Simon Borg-Olivier, Deva Premal & Miten, Nomadic Voices, OKA, Future Sound of Yoga, Carmella Byrnie, Gyuto Monks of Tibet, Acro Yoga, Suzanne Gray, Lance Schuler, Mother Maya, Consta Georgoussis, Gwyn Williams, Lucknow Sankirtan, Flo Fenton, Kevin James & Mel, Yeshe, Julie Smerdon, Liz Costigan, Katie Manitsas, 5 Rhythms Dance and much more.
