The Sanctuary retreat centre on the picturesque island of Koh Pha Ngan in southern Thailand opened in 1992, and was the realization of a vision of its English founders to offer a place where people could enjoy the same benefits they had received from the pratice of yoga and a healthy diet of fresh food in a dreamlike tropical landscape. They envisioned that The Sanctuary would be a perfect place for a ‘life changing holiday experience’.
Since opening, The Sanctuary has slowly evolved from an alternative learning centre, to an international Yoga Centre, a world renowned Detox facility and the recently added Life Centre.
With a range of some twenty-five island styled houses and rooms that can be booked as well as more than twenty simpler but equally comfortable bungalows and dorm rooms, The Sanctuary is perfect for groups of any size or budget. Not an elitist retreat centre, The Sanctuary is relatively unique in being able to accommodate a range of different budgets, offering simple rooms for as little as five dollars per night to luxurious one hundred and fifty dollar a night houses.
The Sanctuary has a special accommodation complex for groups called the Zorba Dwellings, which sleeps twenty-three people in a mix of private rooms and dorm space. This complex was designed with yoga groups in mind. In total the centre can house more than one hundred people in double occupancy.
There are two spacious yoga areas – the stunning pyramid Prana Hall, which is ten metres squared and the eight square-metre Zen Hall, also suitable for meditation sessions, meetings or lectures.
Though one a remote beach accessed mainly by boat (there is a road but it is a bit hair raising to say the least) there is also a thriving community of long term residents at Sanctuary, who co create a lot of the evening entertainment on offer. There is an open mike night once a week, where guests and staff can contribute music, poetry or anything that they would like. Sometimes there is a veritable party atmosphere and lots of dancing – so very good for the spirit. In the same way that yoga connects us to self, dance connects us to self and others and the whole environment. You are sure to meet some super interesting people at Sanctuary, either who live around abouts, fly in regularly or have somehow stumbled across this little slice of paradise in the course of a long journey.
An Idyllic Location
Located on the small and enchanting island of Koh Pha Ngan in the Gulf of Thailand, The Sanctuary sits in a very privileged position on the remote and pristine eastern coastline at Haad Tien bay, with the restaurant perched right in front of a white sandy beach. Accessible via boat or taxi from Haad Rin, the more energetic can walk through tropical rainforest starting from the ‘Thai House Bungalow’ in Haad Rin beach.
Surrounded by tropical jungle vegetation, the resort is very secluded and remote, far from shops, noise and other distractions, making it the perfect place to go inward connecting with the self while outwardly communing with the abundant nature.
