Yoga in Salento is an oasis of peace, yoga and healthy living in the heal of the boot in southern Italy; the perfect place to reconnect to your soul and re-discover the joy of living.
A beautiful retreat centre house in an Agroturismo, it occupies twenty hectares, and is blessed with an abundant veggie garden (providing a regular selection of fresh organic vegetables) and a small orchard of well-cared for fruit trees. The sound of birds is ever present and the cool breeze wafting through the yoga shala provides welcome relief during the hotter months.
Two Yoga Shalas
With two beautiful yoga shalas, one in a heritage stone building with an elegant vaulted stone ceiling which accommodates up to 40 people, and another standalone shala in front of the restaurant which can accommodate up to 60 / 70 people (it is 150 square metres). Both shalas are light filled, with wooden floors, and equipped with all the props needed for any kind of yoga class.
Healthy and Tasty Vegetarian Meals
Blessed with an abundant veggie garden and more than ten different varieties of fruit trees, the meals served in the restaurant are often sourced from produce picked just a few hours before mealtimes. Every morning there is a buffet breakfast of cereals, fruits, muesli, tea and coffee, and at 11am there is a delicious vegetarian brunch made up of dishes such as vegetarian risotto, spinach, tasty dahl, seasonal soup, sushi, tastefully selected salads, along with all the trimmings: sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, spices and a range of oils and vinagres.
The retreat schedule at Yoga in Salento is very busy during the summer months (from about May to September / October) and a bit quieter during the winter time. The resident teacher (and founder of Yoga in Salento) Francesca Maniglio teaches Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga retreats, and then many international teachers also come throughout the year to offer their own retreats. Many well loved and renowned teachers both in the Ashtanga tradition as well as Hatha, Vinyasa, Iyengar and Yin yoga come every year to Yoga in Salento.
Peaceful Atmosphere in Nature
Though easily accessible from nearby Lecce, and set within a small village (Zollino) that even has a train station, Yoga in Salento is an oasis of tranquility on 20 hectares of land. Close to the heritage buildings that house the smaller yoga shala, the library and massage rooms are some ancient oak trees providing welcome shade with their abundant leaves in the summertime. There is also a big pool, surrounded by a grassy area with hammocks strung between the trees perfect for delving into the teachings of some of your favourite gurus after morning practice.
Guests are housed in individual rooms, some with ensuite and some with a share bathroom, either in the main building or one of the self contained small houses on the property (3 or 4 rooms each). Rooms are spacious, and tastefully furnished, and have shutters to keep out the very bright light of the midday sun should you need an indoor siesta. Sheets and towels are all provided and there is a daily cleaning service.
If it so happens that you are curious and want to explore the region a bit (you will be forgiven if you want to just stay in the grounds and luxuriate in the nourishment provided by the nature, the lovely food, your new friends and the yoga practice!) then there are some fascinating and very picturesque towns nearby, including the stunning white stone town of Lecce, the spa town of Santa Cesarea de Terme, the beach towns of Otranto and Gallipoli to name just a few.
The water here is the stunning aquamarine colour that you associate with tropical climes such as the maldives, and of course the sun is almost always shining from the months of May to October. Even if you don’t have a car, the wonderful Italian railways can easily and cheaply transport you to many of these surrounding towns in 30 minutes or so.
