David Lurey

A well-established travelling yoga teacher who regularly crosses continents to teach yoga – David Lurey’s route into teaching came after dissatisfaction with more conventional jobs. After three years in the hotel business and three more in software, he was disenchanted with ‘climbing the ladder’ and wanted to do work that was making a more positive impact in peoples’ lives.

So, on the advice of his first yoga teacher, he eventually quit his software job without a plan and took a leap into yoga with a teacher training.

Yoga, Travel and Business know-how

Armed with a business degree and inspired by his love of travel, David Lurey has been able to grow his yoga teaching practice from those first trips to his current lifestyle, which involves year-round travelling, teaching classes and retreats to students who are always happy to welcome him back. David admits that the global yogi life is not an easy lifestyle for everyone and it takes a while to become balanced personally, professionally and financially to make this kind of life possible.

Vata Dosha – Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, David is a Vata dosha, meaning he has a tendency towards the air and movement. All his travel and movement keep his Vata over satisfied (he needs lots of grounding practices as well as healthy and regular food, etc). The love of being in many places and seeing friends all over the world while teaching yoga in cities, in the natural environment and at conferences and workshops keeps him on his global yogi path, but after six years of travel, he is beginning to slow down, while at the same time feels pulled to keep travelling a bit to see friends and participate in great events!

David Lurey’s Four Limbed Yoga

  1. Vinyasa Yoga as deep personal connection to yourself
  2. AcroYoga as a fun and expanding practice to connect to other humans
  3. Green Yoga as an explorative and different practice of connecting to the Earth
  4. Bhakti Yoga as a personal path of devotion through music and service

For David, yoga is a two directional journey… inwards to one’s deepest self and outwards to the world one is living in.  Due to the travel schedule he has, he must keep disciplined with his own practice, which keeps his teaching fresh and well informed. Also, meeting people from many different cultures, lifestyles and geographies means that he must find a common thread through the asanas, yoga philosophy and yogic concepts to share with people who all think, act and behave quite differently.

A true ‘Global Yogi’

David adds that for several years now, he has called himself a ‘Global Yogi’ and is happy to be part of this growing international cross cultivating yoga movement. Each class, retreat, training or event he participates in has unique qualities and energies, making this path and journey very exciting. He runs a teacher training every year in Brazil, which can help you on the way… to being your own Global Yogi, but you’ve got to take the first step!
