Hilary Brown, Yoga Moves, The Netherlands

For Hilary (Menting) Brown, yoga was her hobby for many years before she started to teach. She had moved to Holland and found that she was not able to easily continue her other career in health research, and then found herself enrolling for a teacher training program, which, initially she thought she would pursue for fun and to connect with others on a similar path.

But during the course of her training it became apparent that teaching yoga was a great way for her to combine her years of training as a dancer, body-worker, social worker, trainer, entrepreneur with her interest in spirituality.

Power Yoga

In Holland at the time Power Yoga started to become prominent, and since she already had a lot of experience in ashtanga, vinyasa and dynamic yoga, it was an easy step to start to teach more powerful forms of hatha yoga… and thus, her teaching journey began!

Yoga Moves in Utrecht, Holland

The stars were aligned, helping her find a wonderful space in the center of Utrecht, where she set up her studio called Yoga Motion (now Yoga Moves). From these beginnings, Hilary Brown and Yoga Moves have grown and changed, and continue growing and changing. And the rest, as they say, is history! Needless to say, the whole adventure has been a powerful journey punctuated by joy, pain, laughter, growth, and supported by continual learning and development.

Retreats in Goa

Hilary started leading international retreats in Goa, India with her colleague Marleen Henny, with whom she had already been working with for many years. Sharing a deep friendship forged through countless hours of discussing the ins and outs of yoga, work, friends and life in general, Marleen invited her to join her in setting up a yoga retreat in India. Since she started leading retreats, Hilary discovered that teaching in a retreat or yoga holiday setting is one of her most satisfying teaching modalities, offering both the participants and the teacher a chance to relax, let go, and connect with oneself and others.

The yoga taught on retreats is offered and practiced in a way that is free from the stresses of everyday life, thus allowing students to be open to just seeing what emerges, rather than focussing on what they think should be happening. This in turn creates an environment where freedom and exploration is possible. This, combined with fewer time constraints offers people the chance to go deeper and wider into their particular yogic areas of interest.

Fluid Vinyasa Yoga

Hilary teaches a fluid and free-form style of vinyasa yoga (movement following the breath), grounded in deep alignment and breath awareness, which is accessible to all. Trained in Iyengar Yoga, Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, Prana Flow Vinyasa Yoga and Restorative Yoga, she also integrates her training as a dancer and a body-worker into her teaching. She adjusts each class to suit the season, the time of day and the flow of her students.

Apart from her regular teaching shedule, Hilary hopes to be able to offer more retreats in the future, and would live to see you at one of them!
