Philip Xerri

Until he was twenty one, Phillip was a public service employee. Then, with the onset of the sixties and the social change and upheaval that came with it, Phillip became a hippy, letting himself be swept up in the music, drugs and the ensuing consciousness shift.

By the mid-seventies his life had become aimless and he found himself at his life’s lowest point, in his own words ‘the bottom of the pit’. It was there, at the bottom and looking up, that he realised that he was faced with two options: stay there, or start climbing up towards the light. He started attending meditation classes and after passing through a series of different schools and teachers he eventually found yoga.

His broad life experience, and especially living through such turbulent times as the sixties and seventies, when young people caught up in the anti-conformist hippy movement were actively encouraged to look at life through new eyes, has given him insights into the many different levels of existence.

Phillip teaches primarily Pranayama or breathing practices, which he has been studying and teaching for thirty years. He regards pranayama as the contemplative and energetic heart of yoga. For Phillip, it is through pranayama that the consciousness is elevated while perceptions of the body become more subtle and the deeper aspects of yoga become more accessible.
